Yesterday I had the privilege of interviewing Ron Kaufman, the author of Uplifting Service: The Proven Path to Delighting Your Customers, Colleagues, and Everyone Else You Meet. Once you watch the video of our interview together you will notice something powerful about Ron. He is enigmatic, encouraging, and enlightening. His presence shows through on the interview like no one I have ever interviewed before. You can tell that he is passionate about this subject. He took this topic of Uplifting service and totally tailored it to us online tutors.
I specifically asked him how we could provide uplifting service with our online tutoring programs. He said that the first thing to take into consideration is that you are really serving three people. You are serving the child, the parent, and the classroom teacher. Wow, he is so right and so often I have neglected to incorporate the teacher into the tutoring that I do. In fact he gives awesome suggestions on how to do this in the interview, but I am not going to be a spoiler, so I will let you watch and enjoy his solution.
The second thing that stood out for me was how to find out what each specific parent is looking for in the tutoring relationship. If you can find out what will wow them, then you can deliver it. But what happens when you don’t take the time to do this? Well, clients disappear into cyberspace. It has happened to me. I am really excited to dig deeper from each of my clients and find out what would make them happy. April is my busy season, and that is right around the corner, so I will definitely be applying these principles to each and every new student that I get.
