When people get a job, they usually begin working right away. However, when someone starts a business it takes time to build it up. In fact, it can take on average 3-5 years to build a business. Along the way 75% of those businesses actually close their doors and quit.
I would expect that the amount of online tutors that actually quit would even be higher than that. Many online tutors struggle with where to get new clients. They think that all they have to do is put their information on a website and that people will start coming so fast, they won’t know how to service them all. That is actually the opposite effect that most people have.
In fact, they try signing up on tons of these websites and still get the same results. The only way to really start building up your business is to learn SEO tactics and utilize Social Media. With videos and blogs, more people have the opportunity to find out about you and your business. To learn each of these tactics on your own can take years. This is why I highly suggest that you get a coach that has done it before. If you want a strong business in 1-2 years vs. 3-5 then you need to get a coach that can lead you through the rough spots.
As an online tutor that has a booked solid business, I help people who want to have the same for their business. I also help people charge more than they could even imagine charging. I personally think that teachers are worth more than they give themselves credit for. They deserve to get paid top prices and not just $10 an hour. According to care.com, high school students get paid $10 -$15 an hour for tutoring. Shouldn’t a teacher get paid way more than that? Certainly they have more tools under their belt that can help close the gap quickly.
Everyone always wants to know how you can build a tutoring business quickly. My suggestion is that if you want to do this, then invest the amount of time that you would like to work your business with marketing it. For example, if you would like to tutor for 20 hours a week and you currently don’t have any students, then try marketing for 20 hours a week until you get some. Then as you continue to get new students you can delete that time from your advertising time.
20 hours a week (goal hours)
– 3 students at 3 hours each
