In this post, we are going to explore the top  4 questions that people have before they immerse themselves in this new medium.

Why Should I Use Instagram?

The first reason is, it is easy.

You post pictures, follow people and double tap to love their pictures.  There is little resharing of content and it is expected to promote your business.

On some social media platforms you can only connect with people that know you, but on Instagram, you can connect with anyone including homeschooling parents even if you are not a homeschooling parent.  You can also connect with other teachers who could become referral partners.

Another reason is that that there are over 500 million daily active users on this platform.  With that being the case, do you think your ideal client could be there?  If you answered yes, you are probably right.

If you want to stay top of mind for people when it comes to tutoring, this is a great place to do it.

Let’s take a look at how to use Instagram for business.

What do you Post on Instagram?

There is a magic formula for businesses that will work well.

If you glance at Instagram, then you will notice there is a nine-block grid of your posts.  You can post 3-5 times a day, but when you view your pictures you want to have 2 that promote your business, 4 that are helpful or useful, and 3 that focus on your clients.  It looks like this.

Helpful/useful Promote

Here are the kinds of photos that you can create based on this formula.

  1. Coupons
  2. Free Assessment
  3. Call-you
  4. Freebie

  1. Tips
  3. Interesting statistics
  4. Humor

  1. Testimonials
  2. Behind the scenes content
  3. Pictures of your students

Here is how that 9-square grid looks.  It doesn’t follow the formula exactly, but it gives you an idea.

What Tools Help You Create the Best Phots?

If this is a visual social media platform, then you want to make sure that your images are a bit more professional looking than in other places.

For great free stock photos go to Librestock.  This one search tool will find photos on 40 different sites that offer free photos.

To edit photos you can use the built-in tools on Instagram or you can use Canva. Canva is a drag and drop simple tool that allows you to create the most visually appealing photos.

Another fun app is called WordSwag.  It is an app for the iPhone/apple devices and it is really easy to create tip posts where you keep the same background image and just change the tip.

It is also great for creating quote posts.  When you add text, there is a place with motivational quotes you can easily use.  Just add your website and voila.

How Do You Use  Hashtags to Get New Followers?

No one utilizes hashtags better than Instagram.  One of our members, Dana Harris, did a training during our last Social Media Hacks 2018 conference and mentioned the idea of using 30 hashtags.

At first I thought, that is insane.  Why would you use that many?  So I did some research on the topic and found this.

I started using this formula and guess what?  I was getting about 10 new followers from my ideal followers.

Here are the steps for the perfect post.

  1.  Write a caption
  2.  Add six dots
  3.  Add 30 hashtags

Here is an example of what that looks like.
