Stepping off of the plane, I could feel the warm 75-degree Jamaican breeze. I could smell humidity in the air, and I instantly knew that I was in paradise.
This certainly was a welcomed breath of fresh air. Especially since earlier in the day in Wisconsin, it was an ice chilling -5 degrees Fahrenheit. With the wind chill, it was -25 degrees. Brrr…
So, why in the world, on a blog about becoming an online tutor, would I share this with you? Well, it is part of the secret to my success.
Secret #1: Visualize
About ten years ago, I was completely unhappy with my life. I felt like I had followed all the rules. I went to school, got good grades, went to college, got married, and had 3 amazing daughters. So why wasn’t I happy?
I was living the American dream, but I had been completely unhappy. I read the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrnes, and my life began to turn around. I began dreaming again.
When I was teaching in the classroom, the only time I could travel was when everyone else was on break. In fact, you had to jump through hoops to get approved vacation travel, and it was highly looked down upon.
Today I can choose to travel whenever I want, and I can teach from wherever I want. However, on this vacation, there will be no working with students. It is time to sit back, relax, and enjoy time with my husband.
Secret #2: Don’t Forget to Take Time off
It is so easy to immerse yourself in taking every action under the sun, that you forget to take time to put your business on hold and take some time relaxing. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you are taking too much time to relax and not putting in enough action, it is just a reminder to take some time off a couple of times throughout the year and enjoy why you do everything that you do.
My husband and I decided that for our 20th wedding anniversary, we would go somewhere to a beach and just relax. We left our children in the care of their grandparents, hopped on a plane, and we were off on our adventure.
Neither of us had been to Jamaica before. With the recent hurricanes that destroyed many islands, we purposefully looked for one that still looked like paradise. So Jamaica it was.
When we arrived, it was raining. This wasn’t that big of a deal since it was 5:00 pm.
As they say in Jamaica, “No worries, mon.”
But the forecast wasn’t looking like it was going to get any better. So we made a change of plans. No matter what I had decided, I was going to have fun.
I began looking for excursions, and one stood out the most. It was to Mystic Mountain where my husband and I could go to a rainforest to bobsled, zipline, and hike up a huge waterfall.
I booked the excursion for the next day.
The next day arrived, and it was still raining in Montego Bay, but not in Ochos Rios where we would have some fun and explore the amazing land Jamaica had to offer.
Our adventure started with a ski lift to the top of the mountain. I need to point out that this is my favorite kind of ski lift, especially when the weather is 80 degrees.
It was a calm and relaxing way to see the canopy of the rainforest. We could see the ocean, a cruise ship docked, and an occasional butterfly.
The trees were huge.
Once we arrived at the top of the mountain, we went to the bobsled.
While I like to follow directions and keep my hands where they are supposed to be, my husband likes to do things his way. So you get to experience it by clicking on the video.
After the bobsled, we enjoyed a jerk chicken meal overlooking the ocean.
Next to do on our adventure; ziplining. When I first started creating dream boards, a tactic that you can learn more about during the Dream Big 2018 Conference, I added ziplining through a rainforest. Well, I can check this one off my list. It was scary, fun, and exhilarating all in one.
I am not too ashamed to show you this clip. My daughter told me that this was a bad day to wear a dress when I showed it to her.
Next up, Dunns River Falls. I had to purchase special shoes so that I could safely climb up the waterfall. I had never seen anything like this before. This waterfall cascades into the ocean.
As we began climbing up, we walked single file line holding the hand of the person in front and behind us. Our guide helped us through some of the tricky areas.
It was a little overcast, not super hot, but it was 100% fun. The guide made me get under the waterfall, do a backward dive, and go on a rock waterslide that completely immersed me in the water.
We had a videographer, but it is so much more fun taking your own pictures, so I made sure to get a tightly locked bag for my videos and photos. One of the guides even took a picture of us.
As we finished walking up the 950 ft waterfall, we got to walk through a craft market. However, the people working there would not let you look in peace and browse. They wanted to make sure you looked at everything they had even if you were not interested.
We were instructed by our tour guide that if we were not interested, then we needed to say no and walk away. I love shopping, but this was a little too stressful for me.
My husband and I walked to the bus and headed back to our all-inclusive hotel for an amazing steak dinner. We saw an International dance show that featured some Cuban dancers and called it a night.
The next morning we woke up and saw the sun. I turned the lyrics to I “Saw the Sign” by Ace of Base to ‘I Saw the Sun.’ I was excited to have a day to sit back and relax by the ocean.
I started off with paddle boating with my husband. I had never done paddle boating in the ocean. The area we were in was very calm, so it was easy to unwind.
I could write all day about sitting in the sun, but as much fun that sounds for me, I can’t imagine that would be interesting for you. I ordered some really fun non-alcoholic beverages like a Banana Mama, and later on in the day, we tried to play Bingo.
Apparently, Bingo was not popular with the crew that was at our hotel because we were the only ones that showed up. But I have realized that just showing up has big returns because we were given all of the prizes that they were going to hand out. Yea for us.
Have you ever heard of dinoflagellates? Me either. However, these microorganisms glow and turn the water blue when it is stirred up.
This only happens in 4 places in the entire world and the one in Falmouth, Jamaica is the brightest due to their consistent weather.
The glow is formed from small microorganisms that emit a flash of light when touched. The microscopic organisms live and create a natural phenomenon, known as bioluminescence.
The lagoon is home to millions of these organisms that thrive where the salt water meets the fresh water.
If you dip your hand in the water, then you will see water light up around you.
My husband went swimming in it. I had heard that if you bring a water bottle that you can collect the water and it will glow in your bottle. So that is what I did. I had fun slowly shaking my bottle and watching it glow. I am very simple minded.
Our last day gave us some more sunshine. We got just enough color to look like we went on vacation and we explored the beach and found some great shells.
And Hermit crabs. I had never actually seen a hermit crab on a beach before. It was awesome. I was just looking for shells for my daughter, and one of them started to move.
Once we arrived at the airport, we did some shopping and waited until it was time to get on the plane. I was exhausted and had a bit of a headache, so I was kind of out of it. However, my husband heard them call our name. At first, I thought they were going to try to bump us because my husband said the night before they were trying to give rewards for people that would change their departure time.
The lady in front of us at the desk was saying thank you, thank you, thank you to the receptionist because she just got upgraded to first class. I looked at my husband and said I hope we get what she just got.
We went to the front desk, and the receptionist announced that we were upgraded to first class. I was whooping and hollering. (I still get really excited about these kinds of things, and I do not hide my feelings.) It was awesome.
We arrived on the plane, and the stewardess took our drink orders before we had even taken off. My husband had tons of leg room, and we were seriously treated like royalty. Hot nuts, an amazing meal, and a chocolate chip cookie to top it off. Each little detail just made my flight the best one I have had in a long time.
To say that this vacation was relaxing is an understatement.
This was the life I was intended to live, and it is even better than what I visualized eight years ago.
At our next conference, I am going to be taking you through some of the same activities that I did to make my dreams become a reality. I want to do the same thing for you.
If you want to Dream Big and turn your dreams into your reality, then you need to come to the Dream Big Conference January 29th to February 1st. It will all be online, and you will get to network with other online tutors for just $1.
